Description

The literal translation of "Deilginis" is a blend of the Irish for thorn and the old Norse for island. The island is 450m long and 250m wide comprising around 22 acres and located just 300m offshore from Dalkey. The three small islands to the north-east are Lamb Island, Clare Island and Maiden Rock.

The first thing you will notice on the island is the Martello Tower. Fear of an invasion by Napoleon reached panic proportions in Ireland and England in 1804 and was the reason Martello Towers were built, first in Ireland and later in England. Their purpose was to provide towers from which fire could be directed at ships of the hourly expected French invasion fleet. The ruined stone church was built in the 9th/10th century and named after St Begnet who lived in the 6th century. It was altered on the east side when builders used it as living quarters while building the nearby Martello tower and gun battery. An older wooden church was probably here before the present stone one was built. There is also a Cross Slab and Holy Well. A promontory fort was located at the northern end of the island. There is evidence Dalkey Island was inhabited 6,000 years ago and was also used as a Viking base. The historical importance of Dalkey is evident in the town, where you can see three of the seven castles that once stood still remain. The biggest is the massive Archbold’s Tower House on the main street.

The island is only 5 minutes by boat from Coliemore and Bulloch Harbours. You can get a boat ferry from Coliemore Harbour. You can have a picnic on the island (portable BBQ) or camp.

Dalkey Island is also an ideal spot for fishing, with Pollock, Coalfish, Wrasse and Mackerel being caught. Dalkey Island is home to a colony of seals which has greatly expanded in recent years. A herd of goats, originally put there in the early 1800's, live on the island also. Birdwatch Ireland has established a colony of Roseate Terns on Maiden Rock just north of the Island. Common Terns and Arctic Terns are also can be watched.
