Description

Known also as Adare Castle it is believed to have been built by the O'Donovans, rulers of the region into the late 12th century, but there may have been an ancient ring-fort at the site before that. It was later the property of the Earls of Kildare branch of the FitzGerald dynasty for nearly 300 years. They may be responsible for the majority of the remains of the present fortress. During the rebellion in 1536 it was forfeited and granted to the Earls of Desmond who gave the castle its present name. In 1578, the Munster Geraldines were in rebellion and lost the castle to English troops after an 11-day siege. It was finally dismantled by Parliamentary troops in 1657.

A strong, square three storey square tower forms the defensive core of the castle that stands within a walled ward surrounded by a moat. There is also the Great Hall near the river. The main entrance to the castle with drawbridge is on the southern side, and was flanked by two towers.

An extensive conservation and restoration work has been completed recently. The Adare Heritage Centre offers now guided tours of the Adare Desmond Castle, one of the few remaining authentic Norman Castles in Europe. The tour includes transfer by coach to and from the castle with a potted history of the picturesque village of Adare incorporated. The castle can also be viewed from the bridge.
