Description

The remains of a Franciscan friary located about half a mile to the east of the cathedral. It was probably founded by Thomas Fitzmaurice 1st Baron of Kerry about 1253. The tower was added later in the 15th century. The church and transept chapel are complete, as the tower, which is situated in an unusual position; a small section of the convent still stands, with the cloister. The cloister is still impressive, although only pieces of it remain. The impressive five lancets of the east window and the nine trefoiled lancets in the south wall are very similar to those in the cathedral. The friary remained a Conventual foundation to about 1517. It became Observant in 1518. The friary was taken over as a barracks in the reign of Elizabeth I in 1584 however the friars returned in 1613.
