This was the first Cistercian site in Longford County, and the fifth in the country following the first very successful settlement at Mellifont. The Mother house of the abbey was Mellifont. The abbey flourished for over 250 years, surviving an attempt to burn it down by an English army in 1476. It was closed by King Henry VIII. Some of the remains of the abbey still exist. . The only other ruins are of a post-Reformation tower house which stands approximately 30m to the south of the church.
