At Annaghdown the Abbey of St Mary de Portu Patrum may have been founded by Turlogh O'Conor, King of Connaught in the 12th century.
Legend says that St. Brendan founded a convent here for his sister, Brigid in 578, but the remaining buildings date from the fifteenth century. It is thought to have become an Arrosian priory around 1144, though there may also have been an Augustinian priory founded there around the same time.
There are some remains of 12th century construction, but most of the ruins, including the cathedral, date from the 15th century. The ruins of Annaghdown Abbey are a National Monument.
