Description

The Abbey was founded here in 1298 probably by Adam de Staunton of Castlecarra. In 1413 it was transferred by papal decree to the Augustinians who already had a friary in Ballinrobe. The remains of the present abbey are largely early 14th Century. Usurped by the Cromwellians, it was granted by Charles II to Sir Henry Lynch whose family kept it until the last century. Further up the field, in the graveyard, is a 14th century parish church with the lower part of the walls sloping outwards.
