It was founded by Thomas Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald, Lord Offaly in 1290. His descendants MacGraths and O'Briens were benefactors. The Abbey buildings were ruined after the Cromwellian attack on Dungarvan. The present Catholic Church, St. Augustine's Church was built on the foundations of the Abbey and incorporates fragments from it including the coat of arms on the west wall. In the old graveyard there is an ancient slab of stone which claims that Donal McGrath was buried there in 1400 AD, having died on March 17th, {his] seventieth [year]. The Latin says: Hic jacet Donaldus Macrath qui obit xvii die mensis Marcii anno do' MCCCC septuagesimo.
