Description

The early monastery is reputed to have been founded in the early 6th century by St. Finnian of Clonard (“The Master of the Saints of Ireland”) in Co. Westmeath. St. Finnian was also evangelized in Scotland. Ciarán of Clonmacnoise and Colmcille of Iona are among the many to have trained under him.

The church, dating to the 12th century, is the only surviving structural remnant. Aghowle Church is the most important of the early ecclesiastical remains around Tullow. The west gable door is a rare example of Gaelic-Romanesque architecture, with only one other example in Ireland.
