Description

Located on a hilltop overlooking the town of Clifden the Abbeyglen Castle was built in 1832 for John d'Arcy founder of the town of Clifden in 1812. His son Mitchen soon sold the property to the Irish Church Mission Society in 1854. As a result of the Famine the estate hit troubled times and the property fell derelict. In 1953-1955 the Connemara Orphan Nurseries operated here. It was closed due to financial difficulties. After its closure the building fell derelict and was home to cattle and sheep for some time. The property was purchased by Mr. Padraig Joyce and he and his wife operated the Glenowen House Hotel in the 1960s. In 1969, the Joyce family sold the property to the Hughes family, who has improved the castle and gardens to their present state.

Although the castle's name does include the word "castle", Abbeyglen is in fact a manor house hotel as opposed to an actual castle. Located along the famous Sky Road it is surrounded by trees and hills with spectacular views of the Twelve Bens Mountains as well as views of the sea. The restaurant overlooks pleasant gardens and locally caught fresh salmon and fresh shellfish are specialties, while the Piano bar is the scene of many an impromptu musical evening. If you are in the area a trip to nearby Aran Islands is well worth a day visit or longer.
