First known bishop was mentioned in 1189. Although not listed in the Synods of Rathbreasail or Kells, Annaghdown diocese survived nonetheless for many centuries through monastic outreach from Annaghdown Abbey. Several 'bishops of Annaghdown', from 1189 to 1485, were systematically elected by its 'Cathedral Chapter' and, despite many counterclaims from Tuam, some were approved by Rome. In 1485 Annaghdown was formally united with Tuam by Papal decree, and some of its parishes, Claregalway, Moycullen and Shrule, were formally attached to the new diocese. However, the title still survives as Bishop of Eanach Dúin, currently held by Bishop Octavio Cisneros, Auxiliary Bishop of New York.
A 15th century building of Annaghdown Cathedral has an inserted east window of the late 12th century. It is a round-headed window with a richly decorated Romanesque frame. There are triangular panels containing mainly floral motifs and at least one beast. There are intertwined and curling beasts at the ends.
The ruins of Annaghdown Abbey and the 15th century cathedral are National Monuments. Annaghdown Castle was erected on the east shore of Lough Corrib by the O'Flaherties in the late 14th century.
To the north of the Cathedral are the foundations of an early church which is the oldest on the site, and may be of 11th or 12th century date; it was added to at a later period. Further north are the remains of a medieval parish church. One hundred yards southwest of the Cathedral is the Priory.
