Description

These two sandstone Ahenny High Crosses are among the earliest of the ringed high crosses. Due to the designs on the crosses, they have been dated as 8th century but could have been carved as late as the 9th century. Both crosses are skillfully carved with intricate geometrical Celtic designs. These crosses reproduce in stone what would have been patterns in earlier wooden crosses, complete with patterns that mimic the metalwork that held the wooden cross together. While later high crosses concentrated on biblical scenes, these earlier crosses carried intricate interlace designs on almost every surface. The South Cross is 3.90m high and is in the best condition, but has lost its cap. The North Cross has better quality carvings on it, although much of the raised parts have broken off. The North Cross stands at 3.13m high.

Easily accessible, but off the typical tourist routes. The crosses sit on a hillside in a small cemetery just off the main R697 route.
